After reading today’s post, not only will you be able to learn how to say “You’re really good today” in Korean, but you’ll also understand how this Korean expression is grammatically formed. Moreover, we’ll look into the actual expression that Hoshi of SEVENTEEN used for his Instagram post. Let’s begin!
The Korean expression ‘좋다’
Here, we’re going to look at the expression ‘좋다.’ It is an adjective that means “to be good, to be likeable.” It can be used to describe quality of objects, someone’s personality, physical conditions, situations, abilities, moods, weather, etc. Let’s look at some examples.
오늘 날씨가 정말 좋다 = The weather today is really good 나는 바닐라 아이스크림이 좋다 = I like vanilla ice cream 마이클은 오늘 기분이 좋다고 했어 = Michael said he's in a good mood today
The antonyms: 안 좋다, 나쁘다, 싫다
Now, let’s look at the antonym for ‘좋다.’ The antonym of ‘좋다’ comes in three different forms depending on the situation.
The first is ‘안 좋다,’ which means “to be not good.” It is simply a method of using the infinitive of ‘좋다’, and can be used as the opposite in all cases where the adjective ‘좋다’ is used. However, there is no strong tone because it simply denies being good.
The second one is ‘나쁘다,’ which means “to be bad.” Similarly, in all cases where the adjective ‘좋다’ is used, it can be used as the opposite. It shows a stronger tone.
The third one is ‘싫다,’ which means “to be unlikeable, to be hateable.” In special cases, it is used as an antonym for ‘좋다’. It is not an objective evaluation of good or bad, but an adjective that means subjectively that one does not like something. Let’s look at some examples to see the differences.
- 상황이 안 좋다 : The situation is not good - 상황이 나쁘다 : The situation is bad - 상황이 싫다 : The situation is not likeable for my feelings (I hate the situation) - 성격이 안 좋아요 : The personality is not good - 성격이 나빠요 : The personality is bad - 성격이 싫어요 : The personality is dislikeable for me (I don’t like that person’s character)
One thing to be careful with when using ‘좋다’ / ‘싫다’
One thing you also need to be careful of is that ‘좋다’ and ‘싫다’ both can be only used as adjectives. If you want to use them as a verb, you need to use it as the following: For ‘좋다,’ you need to use the verb ‘좋아하다,’ which means “to like something.”
나는 케이크를 좋아한다. = I like cake. 마이클은 안나를 좋아한다. = Michael likes Anna.
For ‘싫다,’ you need to use the verb ‘싫어하다,’ which means “to hate something.”
나의 여동생은 벌레를 정말 싫어한다. = My younger sister really hates bugs. 나는 초콜렛 케이크를 싫어한다. = I dislike chocolate cake.
Hoshi says: “날씨 너 오늘 진짜 좋다☀️🌈”
In conclusion, Hoshi of SEVENTEEN is saying that the weather is really good today. It’s actually quite intuitive to understand this sentence: “날씨 (weather) 너 (you) 오늘 (today) 진짜 (for real) 좋다 (are good)”
He posted pictures of himself playing outside and eating some delicious things, so he seems to have played outside that day. The sky is very sunny on all of his pictures, so that is probably why he is saying that the weather today is really good!
